Patriarchy will not have the last word – Stand with WOC!
On November 1, 2016 on the papal plane from Sweden to Rome, Pope Francis was asked by a journalist: “Is it realistic to think that there might be women priests in the next few decades?”
Referring to Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, he responded: “On the ordination of women in the Catholic Church, the last word is clear. It was given by St. John Paul II and this remains.”
The journalist pressed the question by asking, “But really forever? Never?” To which Pope Francis confirmed: “If we read carefully the declaration made by St. John Paul II, it goes in that direction.”
We are profoundly disappointed with Pope Francis’ reliance on his predecessors’ documents regarding the possibility of priestly ordination for women and responded immediately with a statement. (See below for our full statement.)
Stand in solidarity with WOC and the vast majority of Catholics who support women’s ordination with an emergency donation today. Your support will help us ramp up our actions in the coming year so that “never ever” is simply not an option.
