Vocations Sunday 2019 Success: Women Are Here!

Vocations Sunday 2019 Success: Women Are Here!

On May 12, Vocations Sunday, supporters of women’s ordination in 9 cities (and counting!) in the U.S. and UK gathered to proclaim, “Where are the women? The women are here!”

Supporters gather outside Denver’s Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

We made sure our voices were loud and clear in the wake of Pope Francis’ statements last week that he cannot yet make a sacramental decree about ordaining women deacons “without a theological, historical foundation.” We will not wait for further studies to act on our conviction that the Spirit calls us to justice and equality now!

In Washington, D.C., 70 people gathered for a Mass with a Roman Catholic Women Priest for “Mass on Mass en Masse” near the Vatican Embassy. And in New York City on Saturday evening, a prayerful witness and reflection on “Vocations Lost and Found” allowed participants to explore and embrace their own vocations.

In Rome, “Missing” posters decorated the doors of churches throughout the city. In the U.K., vigils in Clifton, London, and Walsingham from our Women’s Ordination Worldwide partners, Catholic Women’s Ordination, drew media attention on the BBC.

Meanwhile, across Germany, women have begun their week-long strike, Maria 2.0, during which they will not step foot inside a church, and are protesting outside. See coverage in The Tablet and The Economist for more.

And if you’re in the Philadelphia area, come for a witness on May 18!
