A Letter From the Women in the Worldwide Church on the Occasion of the Synod for the Pan-Amazonian Region

To the Synodal Fathers, to the experts and to the auditors:
As women believers we look with attention and great hope to the Synod for the Pan-Amazonian Region which is gathering in Rome from 6th to 27th October. We recognise the historic and revolutionary significance of this Synod which addresses both pastoral challenges and care for the planet. These are key themes in the Amazon, especially at the present moment. We are aware that to respond to such important and serious needs, it is essential to start recognising the wisdom of the peoples who have a close and direct connection with nature. We accompany the work of the Synodal Fathers and of all the participants and experts with our prayer and with our daily commitment to a Church closer to the Gospel and to the service of peoples in the reality of their lives.
However, the authenticity of our closeness and prayer does not conceal the bitterness we feel over the perpetration of an unjust impediment to the women who will take part in the Synod: their prohibition from voting on the final document that they will have contributed to developing.
Once again, decisions concerning a huge region inhabited by men and women will be taken by men alone. The words of Cardinal Léon-Joseph Suenens at the Second Vatican Council still resound today: “Where is the other half of the Church?” Today this other half is here but as a minority, as a supplement and without the right to vote.
Nevertheless, we trust in the action of the Holy Spirit. We are especially interested in knowing what will arise with respect to the question addressed in the Preparatory Document: “it is necessary to identify the type of official ministry that can be conferred on women, taking into account the central role which women play today in the Amazonian Church.”[1]
While we are aware of differences between cultures, we are convinced that women play a central role in the Church all over the world, even though they do not have an official ministry. Therefore, we trust in the creativity of the Spirit and we pray that there will be humble and courageous obedience to its promptings. We also trust that the outcomes of the Synod will extend to us in the right times and ways.
We await all this with an open heart, but without fear of looking you straight in the eye and questioning the choices that will be made by the brother Bishops in union with the Bishop of Rome.

Ai Padri sinodali, agli esperti e agli uditori e uditrici:
Come donne credenti guardiamo con attenzione e grande speranza al Sinodo per la Regione Pan-Amazzonica che si apre in questi giorni a Roma. Riconosciamo la portata storica e rivoluzionaria di questo sinodo che si lascia interrogare contemporaneamente dalle sfide pastorali e di salvaguardia del pianeta che si stanno ponendo oggi in Amazzonia, con la consapevolezza che, per rispondere a così grandi e gravi urgenze, è necessario partire dal riconoscimento della sapienza dei popoli che ancora oggi mantengono uno stretto e diretto contatto con la natura.
Accompagniamo i lavori dei padri sinodali e di tutti i partecipanti ed esperti con la nostra preghiera e l’offerta del nostro quotidiano impegno per una Chiesa sempre più evangelica e al servizio dei popoli, nella concretezza dei luoghi e dei tempi in cui questi popoli vivono.
L’autenticità della nostra vicinanza e preghiera non nasconde però l’amarezza per il perpetrarsi dell’ingiusto impedimento, alle donne che prenderanno parte ai lavori, di votare il documento finale che pure avranno collaborato a elaborare. Ancora una volta le decisioni che riguarderanno un’enorme regione composta da uomini e donne, verranno prese da soli uomini, e sentiamo ancora risuonare le parole del cardinale Léon-Joseph Suenens al Concilio Vaticano II quando disse “dov’è l’altra metà della Chiesa?”. Oggi è presente, ma minoritaria, aggiunta e senza diritto di voto.
Siamo comunque fiduciose nell’azione dello Spirito e interessate in particolare a quanto emergerà rispetto alla questione aperta nel documento preparatorio laddove si dice: “occorre individuare quale tipo di ministero ufficiale possa essere conferito alla donna, tenendo conto del ruolo centrale che le donne rivestono oggi nella Chiesa amazzonica”. Pur consapevoli delle difformità dei contesti, siamo convinte che in tutto il mondo le donne rivestano un ruolo centrale nella Chiesa, pur non avendo un ministero ufficiale, e pertanto confidiamo nella creatività dello Spirito e nella docile e coraggiosa obbedienza a quanto suggerirà.
E che quanto si farà per l’Amazzonia possa, nei giusti tempi e modi, giungere fino a noi.
Attendiamo con cuore aperto, ma senza timore di guardare negli occhi e chiedere ragione delle scelte che verranno prese dai fratelli vescovi, in unione con il vescovo di Roma.
