Advocates call for Votes for Catholic Women at future synods

Five Catholic reform organizations representing thousands of Catholic women and men sent a letter to Synod officials at the Vatican requesting the integration of women religious as full voting members at future synods.

Women’s Ordination Conference, along with Donna per la Chiesa, Voices of Faith, Catholic Women Speak, and FutureChurch responded to an invitation from a Vatican official who suggested that, as synod officials begin the process of organizing the next synod, this would be an effective time to submit our request that women superiors general should be integrated as full voting members at synods.

The letter from the five groups, which was hand-delivered by Voices of Faith on January 30, 2020, is below in English and Italian.

Dear Brothers in Christ,

We represent associations and groups of Catholic lay women from different parts of the world. We join with Catholic women religious in this quest. As you know, in the last three synods, male religious superiors who were not ordained were given voting privileges. Women religious superiors have the same ecclesial status as those men. But, they were excluded from fully participating in the synod because while their non-ordained brother(s) could vote, they could not.   Members of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), the Union of Superiors General (USG), along with thousands of Catholics have requested that all the participation rights, including voting, be granted to women religious superiors.  In accord with Pope Francis’s call for synodality, this act would signal true synodality in our Church, the beginning of renewal for the whole Church and its ecclesial structures. 

Women religious have dedicated their lives to serve Christ and the global Church. The wisdom, charism and experience of working on the margins that religious have, as well as the lay faithful, is a gift to the Church and to our synodal process. 

We request that the synod rules be modified so that women religious superiors will be invited in at least equal numbers to male religious superiors and given the same rights and responsibilities for shaping and voting on important synod documents.  We are at the beginning of this new path, with the responsibility that comes from all the sisters and brothers who have delegated us and with the strength and peaceful belief that it is for the good of the whole Church, to formally ask that the regulations of the future Synod will include the right of voting for the women participating (at least the Superior Generals that will be present).

We are available and willing to collaborate, with the conviction that we all share the urgency to make our Church a truly place of full dignity and equality for all baptized.

Cari Fratelli in Cristo,

Noi rappresentiamo associazioni e gruppi di donne cattoliche laiche da diverse parti del mondo e ci uniamo alle religiose cattoliche con una richiesta. Come sapete, negli ultimi tre sinodi, ai superiori religiosi non ordinati è stata attribuita la facoltà di votare. Le superiore religiose, pur avendo lo stesso status ecclesiale, sono state escluse dalla piena partecipazione al sinodo perché, a differenza dei loro fratelli non ordinati che potevano votare, loro non potevano.   Membri dell’Unione internazionale delle Superiore generali (UISG), l’Unione dei Superiori Generali (USG), insieme a migliaia di cattolici hanno richiesto che tutti i diritti di partecipazione, compreso quello di voto, fossero garantiti alle superiore di congregazioni religiose. In accordo con l’appello di Papa Francesco alla sinodalità, questo atto sarebbe un segnale di vera sinodalità nella nostra Chiesa, l’inizio di un rinnovamento per tutta la Chiesa nelle sue strutture. 

Le donne consecrate hanno dedicato le loro vite a servire Cristo e la Chiesa globale. La saggezza, il carisma e l’esperienza di lavorare ai margini che le religiose hanno, come quelli dei fedeli laici, sono un dono per la Chiesa e per il nostro processo sinodale.

Chiediamo dunque che le regole del Sinodo siano modificate in maniera tale che le superiore maggiori siano invitate almeno nello stesso numero dei superiori e che siano loro garantiti gli stessi diritti e responsabilità nella definizione e nel voto dell’importante documento finale del sinodo.  Sappiamo che siamo all’inizio di un nuovo cammino e con la responsabilità che ci viene da tutte le sorelle e i fratelli che ci hanno delegato, insieme alla forte e pacificante convinzione che sia per il bene della Chiesa tutta, chiediamo formalmente che i regolamenti del future Sinodo includano il diritto di votare per le donne partecipanti (almeno delle Superiore Generali). 

Siamo disponibili e desiderose di collaborare, con la convinzione che tutti condividiamo l’urgenza di rendere la nostra Chiesa un luogo davvero di piena dignità e uguaglianza di tutti i battezzati.
