Celebrating Mary Magdalene and Her Gospel
This Sunday the Community of Mary Magdalene in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania will celebrate (via Zoom) the gifts of this amazing benefactor/saint to our lives with a mass with readings from the lost apocryphal text, Gospel of Mary.
At the end of Mass, we will have the pleasure of honoring Dr. Shannen Dee Williams with the 2020 Mary Magdalene Award for her outstanding body of work highlighting the lives and contributions of Black women throughout the history of the Catholic Church.
Many of you may remember Dr. Williams as a keynote speaker at the 2015 Women’s Ordination Worldwide conference, and her powerful descriptions of those Black women who overcame – and are still overcoming – rejection and obstacles in realizing their full vocations due to the sin of racism and sexism in the Church and in society. Her first book, Subversive Habits: The Untold Stories of Black Catholic Nuns in the United States is soon to be published, and her recent reflections on racism and the need for anti-racism are in both NCR and America.
We need the perspectives of Shannen Dee Williams as we need the insights of that long ago Gospel. One of the absolutely fascinating things about the Gospel of Mary is it really asks us to rethink that story about Christian history: Did all the disciples “get it”? Did they really understand and preach the truth?
We could say the same about so many who are trying to “preach truth” and those of us trying to “discern truth” in the world today. More than ever we need to be together to listen, reflect, and celebrate.

* My sister Jeanine would also like to know. (She already has the Zoom Link, above.)
Hi Janette – the Mass will be at 9 a.m. EST on the 19th. My apologies for not seeing this earlier, and I hope you can make it!
Lovely!
Religious patriarchy is the work of the devil, disguised as an “angel of light.” For 2000 years, the devil has been able to deny Christ any chance of calling women to the priesthood. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will soon liberate the church from patriarchal gender ideology. Mary Magdalene, pray for us.
May I also have the link to the Sunday liturgy? Thanks, Paula Hoeffer
