On April 30, Vocations Sunday, WOC supporters worldwide shared the shoes and stories of women, trans, and nonbinary people who have walked the extra mile for the church only to have their vocations rejected. And we were met with priests attempting to throw those shoes in the trash without even a conversation (Denver), police threatening citations at a peaceful witness (Cincinnati), and a priest telling campaigners outside Westminster Cathedral in London to stop “interfering” with his congregation.
Garbage, a threat, an interference—these notions of women’s, trans and nonbinary people’s vocations are unholy lies. The vocations of all genders to ordained ministry are gifts from God for the people of God, and we will continue to recognize, support, honor, and celebrate them.
